This past weekend was the first weekend of the spring 2013 racing season and saw both
the lightweights and heavyweights in action. The lightweights travelled to Camden to take on
Georgetown, while the heavyweights travelled to Philadelphia to race Lehigh University on the
Schuylkill River.

The lightweights faced brisk and blustery tailwind/ crosswind conditions in Camden. The
first race off was the second freshman 4s. Delaware had two entries compared to Georgetown’s
one. Both Delaware boats finished ahead of Georgetown with times of 7.06.5 and 7.24.0 compared to Georgetown’s 7.56.0. The second race of the day was the varsity 8. In a hard fought race Georgetown managed to best the Blue Hens by 0.6 seconds. Finishing times for the race were 5.59.5 and 6.00.1 respectively. The third race down the river was the second varsity eight.
In this race Delaware managed to push out early and slowly increase their lead over the duration
finishing in a time of 6.20.0 with Georgetown coming in at 6.29.1. The last race of the day was
the freshman 8. Delaware once again pushed out early and continued to increase their lead down
the course finishing in a time of 6.05.6 compared to Georgetown’s time of 6.19.6. After a
promising first weekend the lightweights will look to prepare for duels against Harvard and MIT
on the weekend of 3/30 in Boston.

The heavyweights faced the same brisk and blustery conditions in Philadelphia rowing
into a strong headwind throughout the course of the day. In the first race of the day two
Delaware freshman 4s squared off against a single freshman 4 from Lehigh. The Delaware boats
finished first and third. Race times were 7.16.3, 7.25.6, and 8.13.5 respectively. The next race
pitted the Delaware and Lehigh varsity 8s against each other. In this race Delaware once again
managed the win finishing at 6.22.1 compared to Lehigh’s 6.28.5. The last race of the day for the
heavyweights was the freshman 8s. For the third time of the day Delaware was victorious
completing a hard fought sweep of Lehigh. Race times for this race were 6.22.1 and 6.29.3
respectively. The heavyweights will return to Philadelphia this weekend (3/30) to compete in the
Murphy Cup Regatta.
