UDMC Travels to Oak Ridge Tennessee for SIRA Regatta

2 min read

The Varsity Heavyweights and Freshmen/Novice crews traveled to Oak Ridge, Tennessee to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Regatta. The first day of racing was composed of heats, and took place on Friday, April 18. After weigh-ins, the Freshmen Lightweight Four competed in a time trial for placement in the A Final. A highly competitive Novice Heavyweight Eight lined up next, but were unfortunately disqualified from the regatta after receiving two official warnings. The Junior Varsity Heavyweight Eight took the field next. Faced with an extremely difficult heat, the JV fought and finished 4th in front of Rollins and behind Purdue, Virginia, and Florida Tech, advancing to the B Final. Racing late in the day, the Varsity Heavies came in second in their heat behind Temple to advance to the semifinals.

The next day saw the semifinals and finals. The Varsity Heavies finished 4th in their semi, and advanced to the B Final. The Novice lightweight Four finished 3rd overall in the A Final. In an exciting finish, the 2nd Novice Eight beat Purdue by a fraction of a second to win their final. The JV Heavies showed their strength and won the B Final, coming from fourth place with 500 meters left and sprinting into first by less than a second. Next up, the V8 won the B Final, posting a time faster than three crews in the A Final. This finished up UDMC’s showing in the regatta.

The Heavyweights will be traveling to Boston to take on MIT, and hope to make a name for themselves with a win. The Lightweights will be racing in Philadelphia against Navy and Princeton, and expect a quality race.
