Heavyweights Show Their Speed On The Schuylkill Against Lehigh

2 min read

This weekend, Varsity and Freshmen Heavyweights raced Lehigh on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The team fielded a Varsity Heavyweight 8+ and two Varsity Heavyweight 4+’s comprised of 2nd Varsity 8+ rowers, along with a Freshmen Heavyweight 8+ and two Freshmen 4+’s. In the Varsity 4+’s, both of the Delaware Boats quickly pulled ahead of the Lehigh 4+ and dueled it out to the finish, resulting in 20 and 23 second wins. Lehigh posed steep competition for Delaware’s Freshmen 4+’s finishing 35 seconds to 1:17 ahead of the Delaware 4+’s. In the Freshmen 8+ Delaware raced down the course to a finish about 8 seconds ahead of the Lehigh 8+. This was a great weekend for both of our Freshmen 8+’s and we look forward to a very competitive rest of the season.

In the final race of the day, Delaware’s Varsity 8+ lined up to race Lehigh’s Varsity 8+. UDMC raced a phenomenal first half putting lengths between the boats by the 1000 meter mark. Unfortunately due to equipment failure in the last 1000 meters Delaware was unable to cross the finish line, resulting in a DNF. Despite being unable to cross, UDMC is extremely proud of its heavyweights’ efforts in the first half. Delaware was able to show significant efforts in speed, creating a large margin before the equipment failure. Moving forward, we are confident that the Heavies will have a very competitive and exciting spring racing season. 1922491_10152044898489150_563376979_n[1]

UDMC would like to thank their hosts at the Schuylkill River and all the parents friends and alumni who supported our heavies Saturday afternoon. We would like to invite our UDMC fans to watch the Heavyweights compete in the Murphy Cup in Camden NJ this Saturday.
