UDMC Season Opener: Lights vs. Georgetown Heavies vs. Lehigh
2 min readThis past weekend, the Lightweight squad traveled to Washington, D.C. to race the Georgetown University lightweights. Saturday morning on the Potomac River brought a fair current, brisk temperatures, and calm water.
The first race of the day consisted of Georgetown and Delaware’s 2nd Varsity 8’s, as well as Delaware’s Freshman 8. The Delaware 2V asserted a lead from the start of the race. They continued to build on their lead and cross the finish line in first place, while the Freshman 8 trailed behind, in second place, ahead of Georgetown’s 2V.
As the current began to settle and temperatures started to rise, both the Delaware and Georgetown Varsity Lightweight 8’s took to the starting line for the second race of the day. The Delaware Varsity 8 opened up a considerable lead within the first 500 meters of the race and continued to build on that lead throughout the remaining 1500 meters. Delaware finished the race 18.9 seconds ahead of Georgetown. The 3rd Varsity 8 and Freshman 4 fell just short to strong Georgetown crews.
The Fightin’ 150’s will not race this upcoming weekend but take the opportunity to continue to prepare for races against Dartmouth and Fordham on Saturday April 4th.
